Acercamiento Hispano de Carolina del Sur, also known as South Carolina Hispanic Outreach (SCHO), is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1995 in response to the enormous growth and needs of the Latino population in South Carolina, which today has the third-fastest rate of growth in the United States. In 2012 SCHO marked seventeen years of service to the Latino/Hispanic Community of South Carolina while consistently focusing on community outreach, networking and collaborating with other organizations to find solutions to Latino problems and concerns. Over the years SCHO has established itself as the premier Hispanic outreach organization in South Carolina, and has extensive experience in implementing programs that are geared toward the needs of the Hispanic population. SCHO currently operates within a seven-county area in the Midlands of South Carolina including Edgefield, Fairfield, Kershaw, Lexington, Newberry, Richland, and Saluda Counties, and anticipates expanding some operations to Aiken, Greenville and Sumter Counties within the next year.

The Newberry County School District Family Literacy Program’s goal is to increase the county’s literacy rate, decrease its poverty and assist parents in their goal to become their child’s first and most important teacher. The district adopted the concept of a parenting program in 1995. In 2004, Newberry’s program became a true comprehensive family literacy program. This meant serving all families with the core components. The core components, including early childhood education, adult education, parenting, interactive literacy activities, and home visits are wholly integrated with intensity and flexibility to achieve these goals.
